AT&T speeds
With multigigabit plans up to 2,000 Mbps and 5,000 Mbps, AT&T has some of the fastest internet speeds of any major internet service provider in the United States. You don’t really need internet that fast. But AT&T also has internet plans with more reasonable speed ranges, from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps, which are cheaper and still get you fast speeds.

All of AT&T’s fiber internet plans come with unlimited data. DSL plans with speeds up to 75 Mbps come with 1 TB per month, which is plenty of internet data for most internet users. AT&T’s fixed wireless internet plan comes with a much smaller cap at 350 GB per month, and extra data costs $10 per 50 GB.

This fiber internet plan comes at a good price—just $55 per month. Many competing fiber providers offer plans with gigabit speeds only, leaving no option for more affordable fiber. AT&T is unique in offering the reliability and incredibly fast upload speeds of fiber internet, but at a more reasonable price. A plan with 300 Mbps isn’t the fastest out there, but it’s plenty for most households.

Order a fiber internet plan to get a reward card worth $100 or $150. You get the $100 card with the 300 Mbps and 500 plans and the $150 card with the gigabit plan or faster.

All AT&T’s fiber plans come with unlimited data, so you don’t need to worry about data overage fees unless you’re on a DSL or fixed wireless plan. AT&T’s gateway—a combination modem and router—come with its fiber plans but there is an equipment charge for DSL.
New customers also don’t need to worry about early termination fees, since AT&T no longer requires annual contracts on its internet plans. But if you have a term commitment there is a fee for canceling early.
AT&T internet installation, equipment, and contracts
AT&T goes easy on the customer when it comes to technical matters, with no contracts and self-installation at no additional cost.
AT&T installation and equipment
AT&T’s fiber plans let you opt for self-installation, in which you set everything up yourself with relative ease at no extra cost. But for if your home doesn’t have fiber-to-the-home wiring set up in your place already you may need to pay $99.00 for professional installation. AT&T often waives this fee for fiber plans 1 gig and higher. There is no self-install option for DSL, so you’ll have to pay $99.00 for professional installation.
Your internet plan also requires a modem and router to work. AT&T can supply you with a gateway (a device that combines the two) for free with a fiber plan.
AT&T internet contracts
Unlike some internet service providers, AT&T doesn’t require an annual commitment once you sign up for service. That means you can cancel any time without getting hit with early termination fees.

AT&T got solid ratings in our annual customer satisfaction survey. Out of 13 national providers, AT&T scored in the top third for price and overall satisfaction. It also scored above-average in other important categories.
Customers seem pleased with AT&T’s service—especially fiber users. In our survey, 88% of AT&T customers said their internet speeds “always” or “usually” met their household’s needs. They also experience better than average reliability, with 62% of customers “never” or “rarely” experiencing outages.

When it comes to overall customer satisfaction, AT&T falls in line with its two biggest competitors, cable internet providers Spectrum and Xfinity. However, there’s one category where AT&T outshines them—price. Surveyed customers ranked AT&T third overall in price compared to 13 national providers. Despite Spectrum and Xfinity offering bargain plans with lower price minimums, customers reported they were more satisfied with the value of AT&T’s deals. In this case, it seems cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to customers and their fiber service. With the fastest possible speeds, and in some cases lower prices, AT&T stacks up well against its competition.
However, if you have to pick AT&T’s DSL or fixed wireless plans against these cable providers, Spectrum and Xfinity win. They give faster speeds and better performance overall on a cable connection, and the price is more or less the same.

AT&T Fixed Wireless Internet vs. satellite internet
AT&T’s fixed wireless internet service is better than most satellite internet packages you can get. It’s cheaper, gives you more data, and may give you faster speeds.
Fixed wireless internet is a great option to go for if you live in an area where wired broadband internet isn’t available.
In many remote and rural areas, the only way to get internet is from a satellite provider like HughesNet or Viasat. Satellite internet supplies adequate speeds and a small amount of data, which is great if you have literally no other internet options. But if you’re in an area with cell service, fixed wireless is likely the better way to go, since you get more data and a smoother connection.

Is AT&T internet right for you?
If you can get fiber internet from AT&T, then definitely get AT&T. The AT&T Internet 300 plan gives you very fast internet at a fair price—perfect if you’re working from home, sharing the Wi-Fi with a bunch of roommates or family members, or posting tons of content to the web regularly.
If fiber internet isn’t available, you may still get a good deal from AT&T with DSL, but definitely weigh all your options before signing up. (Notice that the AT&T Internet up to 100 Mbps plan gives you much slower speeds but costs the same as the Fiber 300 plan.) The fixed wireless plan is a good choice as an alternative to satellite internet for rural customers. AT&T Internet Air is well worth trying out if you can get it in your area. It’s a 5G home internet service that AT&T launched as a replacement for customers who can no longer get DSL.
